2018-2019 Annual Report on the MMSD Strategic Framework

This is a connection year. We’re connecting progress on our original 2013 framework to our new baseline. This is our first report on the new set of goals laid out in our new 2018 Strategic Framework. Goals 1 and 2 will look familiar. Goal 3 is new.

As we embark on our new framework aimed at transformational change, we are pleased to see the strategies of our first framework take hold and yield steady results. We have a new, stronger baseline to build upon in the years to come.

Goal 1:

Every child is on track to graduate college, career and community ready. A few consistent metrics help us track our progress over time. Our results have held strong.

Early College STEM Academy future looks bright

The first 26 Early College STEM Academy (ECSA) students made phenomenal progress during the inaugural school year. The average GPA was 3.5, with 19 students qualifying for the Dean’s List and/or the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society in fall 2018. Students completed, on average, 9.19 high school credits. All are on track to earn 30+ college credits by the end of fall 2019 term and 81% are on track to earn 48+ college credits. These outcomes bode well for the future of these students and the future of ECSA.

Goal 2:

Every school is a place where children, staff and families thrive. New Climate Survey “Power Questions” highlight where we want to improve significantly in the years ahead in support of academic success.

Personalized Pathways continues to support Black Excellence

We hope and expect to see even greater results with the addition of a second pathway, “Information Technology and Communication,” in three of our high schools this fall.

Throughout Personalized Pathways, counselors are also working to improve college readiness and post-secondary planning. Counselors collaborate with Pathways Teachers, Experiential Learning Coordinators and ACP Coordinators to ensure that all all Pathways students have rich and meaningful experiences to explore and connect connect to their postsecondary goals (college application/FAFSA preparation, college and field trips, internships, job shadow experiences and so on).

Students participate in classroom lessons and individual counseling sessions with their school counselors to determine relevant coursework that is connected to their academic and career plans and understand the necessary next steps to pursuing their post graduation plan. Through these experiences all Pathways students not only learn information about postsecondary pathways but also begin mapping out an individualized plan to achieving their own college and career goals.

Goal 3:

African American children and youth excel in school. We’ve set a new goal that focuses our attention on dramatically improving the experience of our Black youth.

 

To get a clear picture of the Black student experience, Goal 3 includes all students who identify as Black – including Black, multi-racial students.
